Term Papers For Addiction As A Disease
Term Papers For Addiction As A DiseaseThe use of term papers for addiction as a disease has been around for some time. It is relatively new and may well be just being incorporated into some college courses. These papers contain information on addiction, definition, classification, factors contributing to the problem, care and treatment options, medical aspects of addiction, classification, prognosis, research, etc. While some of these will be used in class discussions, most will be used in the paper itself. Some of the ideas covered by these papers do not explain what addiction is or why it should be considered a disease. It may be more suitable to teach students about alcohol and drug addictions. These are more likely to occur in a classroom setting. They will also offer a better understanding of the concept of addiction in general.Addiction as a disease can be used in some cases when the course focuses on the history of alcoholism or drugs and alcohol in society. The material will a lso be used as the foundation for discussion on the human body. It may also be used in an intro to psychology class, where the idea of addiction as a disease is explored in detail. The use of such papers in a psychology class is appropriate because it would be hard to make sense of the human body without knowing how addiction affects it.Addiction as a disease is useful in other contexts as well. Students may use them in medical schools to help explain the concept to medical students and inform them of the different types of addiction they will encounter in medical school. Student doctors may also use the same papers in residency programs and community colleges. However, there are some real questions about whether addiction as a disease is correct. It is worth examining the matter before an addict decides to enroll in college. The reason for this is that addiction, for the most part, is a mental problem, rather than a physical one. It is possible to become addicted to many things, inc luding food, sex, money, gambling, work, food, exercise, etc.Addictions are divided into three categories: substance abuse, dependence, and withdrawal. Substance abuse is often confused with drug abuse. In fact, addiction is a permanent condition that cannot be cured but can be treated.Dependency is based on psychological effects caused by prolonged and repeated use of a substance or activity. People who have never abused alcohol or drugs can still be dependent. A study of dependence offers clues to the nature of addiction as a disease. There are many medical conditions that are not related to any other type of illness or condition, but are classified as a separate disease. When this happens, we must consider whether the condition is really a disease or just a change in the way we live our lives. Since substance abuse is a learned behavior and not a disease, it is difficult to classify as a separate disease.

Essay Topics For Kafka On The Shore
Essay Topics For Kafka On The ShoreAre you looking for some essay topics for Kafka on the Shore? This is the first book by Umberto Eco that I am reading after I had read his first two novels, The Name of the Rose and The Name of the Sea. I really enjoyed both of these books and I did find myself thinking back to them after finishing Kafka on the Shore. Here are some essay topics for Kafka on the Shore that I found interesting. The first was about the history of writing in America. In this essay, I thought it would be a good idea to do an introduction to the author. I had to take the time to make it sound like it was written by someone with a really high opinion of the writer that we are talking about, and there was something quite funny about that as well. The next essay topics for Kafka on the Shore that I found interesting was about the importance of writing about oneself. While writing this essay, I realized that I felt that Eco had gotten very personal in this book. I found it quit e interesting how he found the right words to say that his characters were emotional persons who were writing to the point of tears. It really was a unique and interesting way to deliver this message.Another essay topics for Kafka on the Shore that I found really fascinating was on how information is lost in translation. This was a very interesting topic because I always thought that Eco's translations from Italian to English were pretty good. I really like that he thought about how the stories and books were translated into different languages. There is something interesting about the idea that one might write a great book about some far away place and how the same kind of story might be told in a language other than English. The final essay topics for Kafka on the Shore that I found interesting was the idea of aging. I thought that this essay would help illustrate how this theme would be used in the book. For instance, a character might encounter a coin or a collection of coins as a souvenir after visiting the fictional destination that the character visited. I also found it interesting that Eco incorporated descriptions of the exotic places into his description of the characters' visit to a place.Overall, I found the essay topics for Kafka on the Shore to be very interesting. It was interesting to see how Eco had brought more of the author's personality to the book. As I said, I really enjoyed the opening essay topic, which covered the history of writing in America. And that was one of the better essays for Kafka on the Shore that I have read.Overall, I think that these essay topics for Kafka on the Shore are a must read. If you enjoy his novels, I think you will like this book as well.

Reflection And Philosophy Paper On Ethics - 1284 Words
Reflection and Philosophy Paper Michael Odom Institution Affiliation Reflection and Philosophy Paper In my personal and professional life, I have found that I subscribe to Deontology for an ethical theory. However, I did not come to hold this belief through detailed introspection in a moral philosophy classroom. Rather, it was part of the values that were inculcated in me by my father throughout my childhood. In particular, he always insisted on the importance of thinking about my actions in an impartial way and to always respect others. When I grew up and read moral philosophy, I was delighted to realize that Immanuel Kantââ¬â¢s Deontological account had at its core both of these values. I hope to one day implement guidelines which willâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦At the time I do not think I fully understood or appreciated this, but now that I am older I think I understand it a little better. When I went to university, I had the opportunity to read moral philosophy and encountered many different theories. One of them was utilitarianism, according to which the moral action is that which maximizes the well-being of the most number of people (Rachels, 2015, p. 98). Another was virtue ethics according to which everyone has to follow the golden mean in their actions. For example, we should not be foolhardy or cowardly, but exercise courage prudently (Rachels, 2015, p. 157). These theories certainly have their appeal, and I feel their force. However the one that captivated me from the beginning was Kantââ¬â¢s Deontological ethics. This account was a modified version of my fatherââ¬â¢s lessons. The lesson about not treating myself as special turned up as the requirement for maxims to be chosen as though they should hold as universal laws of nature (Rachels, 2015, p. 125). In other words, it was not enough to want something, but it would also have to be checked if the act c an be universalized. Kant gives an example to show how his account works by analyzing lying. He points that if you wanted to lie, you should think about what would happen if everyone chose to lie. If everyone lied, then trust would not exist and so the very act of lying would not be possible since it would not be possible to violate trustShow MoreRelatedEthics Reflection Paper Str 581 Week 11312 Words à |à 6 PagesRunning head: WEEK 1; ETHICS REFLECTIONS PAPER Assignment: Week 1; Ethics Reflections Paper By Judith Judson STR 591 ââ¬â Phoenix Campus University of Phoenix Facilitator: Dr. Mark Kolesinsky Week 1, July 18, 2012 Ethics Reflection Paper In the last decade, ethics in corporate America has become highly publicized following the discovery of unethical and fraudulent business practices in major corporations. The result obtained is 5. 8 mmols which is within normal range. FEELING: I felt that the student did what she was asked to do. She felt she did exactly and felt good even though she was under supervision, and she could expand on her ability to do the task well. I needed to demonstrate the correct techniques and explained to the student why (cited by Ed Bryant 2004). We went to a vacant room and explained to her that when taking blood sample it should be the side of the finger using the lancet , ensuring that the site of piercing is rotated. Using lancet device and proper disposal of sharps (Roche Diagnostic Limited 2011). As a mentor I must make sure that the students apply the guidelines and protocol in glucometer as per Hospital Policy. I will observe the students when doing the competence checklist assessment. Just fix, especially since before even the mobile phone was not. For modern man it is important that it was popular, entertaining and not to offend the usual level of self-esteem. That is, it needs options pop: though frank, even marginal. For example, hitting the same pop traditional look the same pop, but in a different form. A steeper than metal Fili from the standpoint of spiritual content? The same crowd, and where the crowd there only sincerity, and not the spirit, and if sincerity, any sincerity has the right to life. Sincerity can not be undone, it requires a pop, and she receives it each his own. And what sense to despise other peoples sincerity? In general, it is not in the content of pop music, and in the audience that does not want to work and is looking for a simple solution. So. 1. Interestingly, then, to create the impression of the development and operation of the mind and soul. Its easy well forgotten old, and order. The main thing in this business the theme 2.. Popular, it means available, but that at the same time it seemed very significant and not easy. Here you can and misquote still no one but the units will not understand 3.. Not offended, then it does not create a sense of inferiority. Again, not difficult, the main thing to emphasize: the reader, if you are reading, youre cool, everybody else is just listening to music, movies and telly zyryat Heres how consciousness becomes massive.. Man today is enough to master any craft bottleneck, organize somehow his personal life, and in general he gets the feeling that his life somehow manages. Only a feeling that comes from the very base of consciousness, cheeps, and then the person begins to sink to some segments of the fact that today is called culture. And it is this culture that this peep calms. In fact, a person with such consciousness must be downloaded as a drug. Drug he goes. Oppose this something completely unrealistic. For these people, it is necessary to create an entertaining, popular and non-offensive cultural production. Its like a fairy tale for children to write:. Is easy, interesting, but instructive It is easy, interesting, instructive (LIP) Who is able to provide, and he gets hit. Tom does not need recognition nor critics, nor a variety of solid premium. Hence the popularity of Dan Brown and similar authors. Most popular authors today, with a few exceptions journalists. Thats who is well able to work in the lime genres. The book, written by a lipoma, can actually pave the way for herself and passed from hand to hand to the complete physical destruction. And if she is also a little bit of advertising, it leaves in a rocket bestsellers. So what am I doing? On why useless to criticize Dan Brown. This means to abuse the general reader. But he was like the hare, all of FIG life is short, and so want to not only have time to do everything, but also to understand something. And then the book, and it is there, and in order to understand something, and not just a buzz word. This is what Dan Brown understands, therefore book it is successful.

The eNotes Blog 5 Creative Ways to Teach Story Elements to MiddleSchoolers
5 Creative Ways to Teach Story Elements to MiddleSchoolers Every time I tell my middle schoolers that we are going to analyze the elements of a story, I get a big groan from about half the room. Somehow, itââ¬â¢s gotten into their heads that writing stories is fun, while breaking down other peopleââ¬â¢s stories is the most boring thing in the world. To combat this pre-teen ennui, Iââ¬â¢ve changed my approach to teaching story elements. I start with a creative writing piece and get them to experiment with different story elements. Then, we move into looking at someone elseââ¬â¢s work. In this way, I trick them into learning all the parts of a story and even having a little fun. Here are some creative ways Ive managed to teach story elements to my students successfully- and without the groan. 1. The Story Arc and a Music Video All my students love music and yet say they donââ¬â¢t understand poetry. Little do they know, itââ¬â¢s pretty much the same thing without drums. I put students into groups of 4-6 depending on class size. Each group picks one popular song that the group likes. Their task is to create a music video for that song. The video must be as long as the song, and it must tell the story of the song, which is completely up to the group. They can take it directly from the story of the lyrics; they can invent characters, situations, and a setting that reflects the idea behind the lyrics; they can create a story that the song perfectly soundtracks but has nothing to do with the lyrics. Even though they have total control over the story, they must tell a well-structured story. Their video must meet these objectives: Introduce a character or characters (Exposition) Set up a conflict (Conflict) Show the character(s) trying to solve the conflict (Rising Action) Bring the conflict to a climax (Climax) Show how the character(s) reacted to the climax (Falling Action) After they create their videos and we watch them, I have them reflect on how the steps they took to create their video match the parts of a story. In this way, theyve learned the parts of a story because they had to create them. And, it gives me something to reference when we begin talking about a novel. 2. Point of View and the Villain The point of view is incredibly important to how a story unfolds and the moral that story communicates. Students often underestimate the power of perspective! So, in this activity, we use point of view to retell popular stories. For instance, I use the Three Little Pigs fairy tale as an example: First, we read the story of the three little pigs and determine the main message. Then, we read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka and have a discussion about how the narrator changed the plot and the moral of the story. (There are some great readings of this story on YouTube!) Finally, students choose their favorite picture book, movie, or fairy tale from their early childhood. Their job is to assume the perspective of the villain and rewrite the story. This can take the form of a picture book, a letter, or a speech- depending on what youââ¬â¢d like to do with your class. This activity helps show students the importance of narrative point of view! 3. Settings Around the Universe The setting of a story helps shape how the narrative can unfold. This is pretty obvious when you are looking at a sci fi book or a fairy tale. But the importance of setting can be overlooked when itââ¬â¢s not central to the story. For this activity, I create 8 different ââ¬Å"setting stationsâ⬠around the classroom. These stations generally consist of a picture of the setting and a description plaque that describes the settingââ¬â¢s characteristics. Some settings that I have used in the past include Mars in the year 3056, Warsaw in 1944, an undersea villains lair, a New York City classroom in 1976, and a Pontiac stuck in traffic on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles. I then prepare 8-15 simple story prompts that consist of a character and a conflict. These conflicts and characters are very basic. For the activity, all students get a story prompt. I ask them to read the prompt and brainstorm how they think the story would end. Then, they are instructed to go to at least four stations. At each station, they write how the setting might affect the way their stories play out. 4. Tone and a Poem I have found that tone is one of the hardest concepts to explain to students. I like to tell my students that tone is attitude. It is the feeling you get when you read, watch, or hear something. To help illustrate this, I choose one or two of the following abstract poems, which donââ¬â¢t have a story so much as they communicate a feeling. ââ¬Å"A Hagging Matchâ⬠by Seamus Heaney ââ¬Å"In the Station at the Metroâ⬠by Ezra Pound ââ¬Å"The Red Wheelbarrowâ⬠by William Carlos Williams ââ¬Å"Those Winter Sundaysâ⬠by Robert Hayden ââ¬Å"When Somebody Telephonesâ⬠by Elizabeth Bishop We read the poem together, and then the students write for one minute about all the things they felt while hearing the poem and all of the images that popped into their heads while listening. Then, they write a brief 1-2 page story that mimics the tone of the poem. For example, if the poem made them sad, they will write a melancholic story. If the poem made them laugh, they will write an upbeat comedy. Finally, when students share their stories, I pair them with another student who highlights all of the words in the story that communicate its feeling. The partner gets to guess which tone the storywriter was going for. 5. Character Traits and Thing Theory Characters can be determined by their dialogue, physical description, word choice, and behavior. One way to look at all the ways authors create characters is looking at the things associated with the character. **For this one, you will either need props or a slide deck with pictures of the items.** I project 5 images of objects and ask students to describe the person who owns each object. The list of items can be random or follow a theme, such as things found in a wallet/purse, things found in a closet, things found in a refrigerator. For each set of items, students must create a name for the person, determine where they live, give five adjectives that describe them, and describe how they talk (informal, formal, slang, accented, etc). Some of my item lists include: Living Room: A rotary telephone, a record player, a smart phone, a yellow raincoat, an old fortune cookie on the carpet Desk: A stack of loose papers, an old macbook, a pair of wire-rimmed glasses, a copy of The Odyssey, a sweater with a hole in the collar Refrigerator: Expired milk, takeout boxes, an uncovered half of avocado, half and half, Sriracha sauce I have found all of these activities very useful in my classroom! My students love tapping into their creativity while they learn. And, I find it helps them remember the concepts better as well. I hope you try these too!

The Peloponnesian War, 431404 B.C.E Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Peloponnesian War, 431404 B.C.E - Essay Example Athens feared for war with Corinth and Sparta and hence it tightened its Potidaea colony by ordering then to bring down their city walls. Against Athens wish, Potidaea rebelled and refused to obey the Athens. Corinthians on the other hand feared the long term growth and strength of the Athens power and were anxious to contain it. They resulted to sending help to Potidaea eventually violating a 30 year old truce of never to help groups considered enemies to the Athens.2 Spartaââ¬â¢s decision to go into war came after they noted a rise in Athenian power and feared that if left to be too strong they might destroy Sparta. Corinth played a role by creating a false allegation on Athens that they were breaking the 30 years truce they had signed. Consequently, Sparta found every reason of war with Athens but missed their main worry of rise in Athenian power. The Peloponnesian war was divided into phases by historians. First, was the Archidamian war; a phase that included the Sparta invading the Attica. Athens on the other side, due to their naval supremacy raided the coast of Peloponnese which resulted to unrest in its empire. The first phase was marked with signing of the treaty known as Peace of Nicias though the treaty never stayed in place for long.3 Athens undermined it and renewed the fighting in Peloponnese and went ahead to use extreme force against Syracuse though it failed immediately. Decelean was the final phase of war and at this level Sparta got support from Persia and hence supported Athensââ¬â¢ rebellions leading to the undermining of the Athens Empire resulting to extinction of Athens supremacy. The end result saw Athens bow down in the year to follow.4 Peloponnesian war had its effects to the fighters and Greece in general. The war resulted to the reshaping of the ancient Greek. In terms of international relationship, Athens which was up to then the strongest city

Kierkegaard and Man's Search for Meaning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Kierkegaard and Man's Search for Meaning - Essay Example The religious stage, it is a leap of faith, and God being our fulfillment it becomes clear as we discover the adequacy of existence. Godââ¬â¢s existence is suggested in our awareness of self-alienation and cannot be collapsed into scientific inquiry. Without risk, they are no faith and truth must be inward reality and cannot simply be grasped at cognitively. The venture chooses an objective uncertainly with passion of infinite (George 77). Life is not primarily a quest for pleasure, as felid believed. The largest task for any person is to find meaning of life. Frank saw three possible sources of meanings in working, love and courage in difficult times. Forces beyond your control can take every thing possible expect your freedom to choose on how to respond on situations. Man, however, can live or even die for the sake of values and ideas. Statistical survey explained that 78% percent said that making money was their first goal in life. Neurogenic neuroses do not come from conflict between drives and instincts but rather from existing problems. It is a frustration often eventuates in sexual compensation (George 67). Ultimately, man should not ask the meaning of life rather he recognizes that it is who is being asked Love is the only way to grasp another human innermost core of his personality. No one can be fully aware of every essence of another human unless he loves him. It emphasizes that is an ultimate purpose of

Organic vs Non-Organic Essay Example for Free
Organic vs Non-Organic Essay What should I eat? That is the question on millions of American minds in the recent years. For years we have fallen for hype, forgoing one food type in favor of another, only to hear months or years later were doing it all wrong. More recently, the nations attention has turned to organic foods in our quest to eat healthy, get slim and live a long and active life. Pesticides, websites and newspapers warn, are leading to an unhealthy America. The use of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, otherwise known as DDT, is brought up time and time again. Prior to 1973, the use of DDT was widespread and our main weapon against the war on pests. We now know the use of DDT led to massive effects on wildlife and humans (DDT- a Brief History, 2012). Whoââ¬â¢s to say one of the many other pesticides and insecticides we spray today wonââ¬â¢t take a similar turn down the road, articles ask? While itââ¬â¢s true any pesticide we use in traditional farming can lead to health problems in humans if consistently exposed, safeguards are put in place and testing is standardized by the United States government to prevent illness and death from the foods we eat. The same cannot be said about organic produce and meat. Organic foods do not have to withstand the same amount of rigorous testing as non-organic and what testing does take place is not even standardized (Tenser, 2013). This can lead to an increased threat of health problems for those who thought they were making the healthier choice. Studies have shown there is no real significant advantage, health wise, in choosing organic over non-organic and that label, and the higher price that accompanies, might not actually be worth it. Proponents of organic foods say they are free from pesticides and hormones used by companies to produce larger animals faster, thus leading to increased profits. Several of the pesticides used today have come under scrutiny of regulatory agencies. More of the vitamins and complex micro nutrients our bodies need to survive are retained when synthetic pesticides are not used. Using natural and biological pest control, organic foods are safer and a healthier alternative to commercialized fruits and vegetables. In actuality, itââ¬â¢s all a myth. There is no organic product on the market today that is free of synthetic pesticides. Over the years, the soil has retained some of the pesticide runoff, which keeps all foods today from being completely free of chemicals (Hom, 1992). The increase in manure usage that accompanies the shunning of synthetic fertilizers leads to an increased risk of E. coli and Salmonella outbreaks (Griswald, 2013, p. 1). This is because manure consists of a greater amount of bacteria and its use runs the risk of cross contamination. The rise in organic farming has led to many of the food borne illnesses that plagued much of the 2000s. The use of hormones is grossly overstated; commercial chicken is not injected with hormones, contrary to what organic food suppliers want you to believe. The use of hormones does nothing to help the chicken become larger or grow faster. Hormone use would simply be a waste of money since no profit is gained from it (Poultry Housing Tips, 2012). In regards to the argument fruits and vegetables grown organically have more of the vitamins and nutrients retained in them, this is true, however a person focused on a well-rounded and healthy diet has no fear of missing certain nutrients their body needs. Not to mention, often times a scrubbing of soap and water cleans off all pesticide residue from any fruits and vegetables you are going to enjoy. If you can afford them, buy them, recommends New York University professor Marion Nestle, PhD (Zelman, n. d. ). Spending a few dollars more for that organic chicken will save mountains of hospital bills down the road, organic food marketers say. Consumers of organic foods spend on average $4000 more a year, convinced the extra expenditure is well worth it in the long run. Also, by spending more, youre told youââ¬â¢re helping save the environment; by not using synthetic pesticides the soil and streams cannot be contaminated. It is true a lean toward more organic farming leads to a more stable growing environment and an increase of local food production (Berger, 2013, p. 1). Still, organic foods are often trucked across state lines to groceries throughout the country. What the use of natural agents saves environmentally is canceled out by the exhaust spewed into the atmosphere and the fossil fuels used during the journey. The cost of organic foods is just not worth the payout. There have been many studies showing there is no real health benefit to eating organic foods (Watson, 2008). Fruits such as bananas and oranges and vegetables such as peas are not eaten whole; they require peeling which means they require less pesticide, meaning the higher price tag on the organic bananas just arenââ¬â¢t worth it. And as the price of organics rises, organics are seen as a status symbol, an ââ¬Å"elitist stratification. â⬠Organic food marketers capitalize on the class divide, marketing organics as a way to lead the beautiful, healthy life of the wealthy. They stress organics are healthier, better, worth the cost (Sprague, 2013, p 1). This is just simply not the case. A well rounded diet is all anyone needs to stay healthy and lead an active life. With this in mind, the higher price tag is just not worth the hype. It has been shown time and time again that organic foods do not have a greater health benefit compared to commercial foods. The label doesnt justify breaking the bank. A well rounded diet is just as beneficial to a healthy society, with or without the use of synthetic pesticides. Organic foods are not the guiding light they claim to be. There is one tried and true method to end most health concerns. Eat a varied diet. Getting all the vitamins and nutrition you need is up to you, not up to a label. References Berger, A. (2013). Organic foods are a healthier alternative. In Points of view reference center (p. 2). dante :: essays research papers
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) The greatest Italian poet and one of the most important writers of European literature. Dante is best known for the epic poem COMMEDIA, c. 1310-14, later named LA DIVINA COMMEDIA. It has profoundly affected not only the religious imagination but all subsequent allegorical creation of imaginary worlds in literature. Dante spent much of his life traveling from one city to another. This had perhaps more to do with the restless times than his wandering character or fixation on the Odyssey. However, his Commedia can also be called a spiritual travel book. "It were a shameful thing if one should rhyme under the semblance of metaphor or rhetorical similitude, and afterwards, being questioned thereof, should be unable to rid his words of such semblance, unto their right understanding." (from Vita Nuova, c. 1293) Dante Alighieri was born into a Florentine family of noble ancestry. Little is known about Dante's childhood. His mother, Bella degli Abati, died when he was seven years old. His father, Alighiero II, made his living by money-lending and renting of property. After the death of his wife he remarried, but died in the early 1280s, before the future poet reached manhood. Brunetto Latini, a man of letters and a politician, became a father figure for Dante, but later in his Commedia Dante placed Latini in Hell, into the seventh circle, among those who were guilty of "violence against nature" - sodomy. Dante received a thorough education in both classical and Christian literature. At the age of 12 he was promised to his future wife, Gemma Donati. Dante had already fallen in love with another girl whom he called Beatrice. She was 9 years old. Years later Dante met Beatrice again. He had become interested in writing verse, and although he wrote several sonnets to Beatrice, he never mentioned his wife Gemma in any of his poems. One of his early sonnets Dante sent to the poet Guido Cavalcanti, which started their friendship. Dante also dedicated his first book to Cavalcanti. The work, LA VITA NUOVA (1292), celebrated Dante's love for Beatrice. The nature of his love had its roots in the medieval concept of "courtly love" and the idealization of women. According to another theory, Beatrice was actually a symbol of 'Santa Sapienza', which united secret societies of the day. Harold Bloom in The Western Canon (1994) sees Beatrice as Dante's greatest muse, his invention, who saved him "by giving him his greatest image for poetry, and he saved her from oblivion, little as she may have wanted such salvation.
